THE House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating cash paid out to government officials annually by insurance companies has summoned the Controller General of Customs, CGC, for allegedly refusing to furnish it with details of its insurance transactions between 2013 and 2015.
The Adekunle Akinlade Abdulkadir-led Committee which last week queried insurance companies for insuring dysfunctional coaches for Nigeria Railways Corporation, NRC, had invited the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, to appear last Friday over the insurance transactions in the last four years, but the Customs representatives failed to turn up.
The Committee which is also probing the alleged misappropriation of over N200 billion of public funds in insurance transactions at the sitting, uncovered a scheme involving the payment of over N910million to two unregistered insurance brokers.
Disclosing this at the investigative hearing, Chairman of the Committee, Abdulkadir, expressed disappointment over how insurance firms attempted to misinform it through distortion of facts in their presentations.
According to him, “The issue is that these companies got business consistently just because some people in the MDAs are being paid.
“Since the commencement of this investigation, we have sent invitations to the NCS but they have refused to make any submission to the Committee.
“We are summoning the CG to explain why he refused to honour the Committee and why it engaged services of unlicensed brokers and agents that cost over a quarter of a billion Naira.
“Many of the insurance companies that appeared deliberately gave us wrong information thinking we can never go to the extent of scrutinising every detail in their submissions.
“Having discovered that it is not business as usual, all the Chief Executives are now saying they did not know about the figures quoted in the documents they submitted.
“What they want now is to give us (Committee) new figures because the earlier ones were no longer correct.
“We will oblige them but in their new submissions, every cover must be accompanied by relevant documents to prove the authenticity of the new figures.”

Reps summon Customs boss over N200bn insurance fund
Bill Cosby has been declared Legally blind by his attorney
Cosby will on Tuesday present to the court, a doctor’s report certifying that his sight is defective and that he’s registered with a state commission for the blind.
“No 79-year-old blind man could possibly defend himself against a claim that he sexually assaulted someone he supposedly met once, half a century ago,” his attorneys said in court documents filed in Pennsylvania.
“Without his eyesight, Mr. Cosby cannot even determine whether he has ever even seen some of his accusers, let alone develop defenses and gather exculpatory evidence,” the documents further stated.
The veteran comedian is facing three charges of felony indecent assault on Andrea Constand, who claims that he drugged and violated her in 2004.

A young man from Akwa Ibom state, Ekomobong Finbarr, constructed and defended this solar powered tricycle (Keke) as his first degree project in Electrical Engineering, Federal University of Technology, (FUTO), Owerri.
According to reports, the tricycle has no engine, just battery and the solar system and can go 11km without blinking.
His Head of Department, Mr. Damian Dike with his colleague Dr. Mrs. Achumba enjoyed the first cruise of the Keke.

End of the World ??? as Russia unveils SATAN 2, a missile that can wipe out the whole of Texas and London
Russia's enemies would be wetting their pants as the European Power-House recently unveiled a new intercontinental ballistic missile that can reportedly destroy a geographic area as large as Texas.
The debut of the RS-28 Sarmat, nicknamed "Satan 2," was first announced by Russian news network Zvezda. It will replace the R-36M Voevoda missile, the original "Satan."
"The Sarmat missile will not only become the R-36M's successor, but also to some extent it will determine in which direction nuclear deterrence in the world will develop," Zvezda reported.
According to Sputnik, an English-language news site with ties to the Russian government, the Sarmat missile will be faster than any missile-defense system in existence. It will have an estimated range of more than 6,000 miles.
It will be equipped with a dozen warheads with a payload of between four to 10 tons. During the missile's debut, a broadcaster on Zvezda said Sarmat missiles could "wipe out" areas as large as Texas or France.
Sputnik reports Sarmat missiles will also be equipped with "advanced anti-missile countermeasures meant to penetrate the U.S. [Advanced Ballistic Missile] shield."
The Russian Defense Ministry plans to put Sarmat missiles into service in 2018. The RS-28 Sarmat missile is also expected to completely replace the R-36M Voevoda missile by 2020, according to Sputnik.

Amaechi squandered resources for infrastructural development and that is why we are rebuilding today - Nyesom Wike
Nyesom Ezenwo Wike,The Governor of Rivers State, has said that the administration started the process of infrastructural development afresh because the immediate past administration of Rotimi Amaechi squandered resources that accrued to the state under his eight years of misrule.
The Governor said it was Amaechi’s eight years of misrule that made it impossible for the former governor to construct a road to the hometown of his political mentor , Chief Godspower Ake of the APC .
Governor Wike spoke on Sunday during the 10th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service of the Omega Power Ministry in Port Harcourt and the Harvest Thanksgiving of Saint Luke Anglican Church , Rumuadaolu.
At the Saint Luke Anglican Church , Governor Wike said :
"Amaechi squandered the money of our people, using state resources to sponsor elections in other places.
"Because of the funds squandered by Amaechi, we are starting the development of sstatewide infrastructure afresh. For eight years, at a time that the state got approximately N20billion monthly, that administration failed to develop critical infrastructure.
"G..U Ake was Amaechi’s political mentor. Yet for eight years, he denied his community the required access road. For us, we will continue to ensure the development of infrastructure in all communities of Rivers State , irrespective of the political leaning of the people ".
Speaking at the Omega Power Ministry , Governor Wike , Governor Wike said he has presented the political problem of the state before God, urging all Christians to pray fervently for the sustenance of the state .
He said: "The same God who ensured that we overcame them in 2015, will answer our prayers".
The governor commended the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministry , Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere for his commitment to the welfare of the less privileged .
In his remarks , General Overseer of the Omega Power Ministry , Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere lauded Governor Wike for living up to his promise of approving the building permit of the church and also granting it certificate of occupancy .
He said all members of Omega Power Ministry , irrespective of their political party , love Governor Wike for his commitment to development and the welfare of the people.
