President Buhari did not go to Germany for Medical Check-up - Rochas Okorocha

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, on Sunday said the assertion that President Muhammadu Buhari’s three-day visit to Germany was more of a medical trip than official engagements was a lie.

Okorocha, who was part of the president’s entourage to Berlin, Germany, was reacting to media interview granted by a Kano-based social commentator, Dr Junaid Muhaamed.

Muhammed had alleged that Buhari visited Germany on Friday to seek medical attention over an undisclosed illness, but Okorocha who spoke to State House correspondents in Abuja debunked the allegation, saying that the official engagements of Buhari in Germany, had no connection, whatsoever, with medication.

He said the visit to Germany only ended on a compassionate note on Saturday with the president’s convoy veering off its way back to the airport in Berlin, to visit a Nigerian military officer receiving treatment in a Berlin hospital.

“President never went for any medical check-up. At least I was with him till 1.00a.m, after the dinner before I left him and he went to bed,

“I went to bed and the following day I came out to see him in the morning, So, the president never went for any medical at all. The only hospital we went to was to see a general who had an accident.

“These are some of the things that people make uninformed comments and I do not know why in this part of our world we are always happy when someone is going down. I think there is need to change our attitude completely.

“If this issue had been on issue on how to move Nigeria forward, you won’t see on social media, you will not see comment on it, nobody we talk about it,’’ he said.

Fulani Herdsmen kill over 20 persons in a clash at Jema LGA Kaduna State

Armed herdsmen between Saturday and Sunday allegdely killed not less than 20 persons after they lay a surprise siege on Godogodo, a semi-urban settlement, in Jema’a Local Government Area, LGA, of Kaduna State, Vanguard reports.

Eye-witnesses and escapees said the area was razed down with a tentative casualty figure of 20, apart from the injured.

The gory incident was said to have heightened tension between the majority Christian population of Kafanchan, about 12 km, north of Godogodo, and its minority settler population of Hausa/Fulani Muslims.

Dr. Humble Katuka who is the Interim Management Committee, IMC, Chairman, of Jema’a LGA, acting on mitigating measures, on Sunday imposed a 24-hour curfew as a result of the tragic incident.

Kafanchan is the Headquarters of Jema’a LGA, about 250 km South of Kaduna metropolis and also the commercial and socio-political hub of Southern Kaduna.

Confirm!! JAMB Scraps the use of Scratch Card for it’s Transactions(Read Details)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has scrapped the use of scratch cards for any of its services and transactions, adding that it would now be using the platform of pin vending to check all forms of fraudulent practices which was prevalent with the use of scratch cards.

This means Webpay interswitch will replace the use of Scratch cards.

A statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, reports the board’s Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, as declaring in a paper he delivered during a meeting of the Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities that the use of scratch cards is “archaic”.

He also demanded that the Federal Government should revert to the former system where serving Vice Chancellors of Universities were made chairmen of the Governing Board of JAMB.

“The decision is as a result of its consistent subjection to fraudulent practices, the use of scratch cards is archaic and it is the drive by JAMB to also promote accountability in line with government’s zero tolerance for corruption. This new system will be accessible through the options of web payment, ATM issued cards (Visa, verve and Mastercard), online quick teller, ATM payment, quick teller mobile application and Bank Branch case/card,” Oloyede said.

He further disclosed that in the past, the understanding was that only serving Vice-Chancellors were made chairmen of Governing Board of JAMB.

While appealing that government should go back to the practice from inception, the JAMB Registrar argued that since the agency is a creation of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors, it would only be proper for them to be clearly recognised as active stakeholders to avoid any acrimony between tertiary institutions and JAMB.

He was optimistic that going back to the old practices would “engender good synergies and harmonious relationship with a view to effectively delivering on its mandates.”

Oloyede recalled that for almost two decades, specifically between 1977 and 1993, only serving Vice-Chancellors were made Chairmen of the Board of JAMB, from Prof Oladipo Akinkugbe, VC University of Ilorin; Prof Donald E.U Ekong, VC University of Port Harcourt; Prof Adamu Baike, VC University of Benin; Prof Mahdi Adamu, VC University of Sokoto and Prof Isa Mohammed, VC University of Abuja.

He said, “This practice which promoted harmony and quality inputs on the Board’s matriculation activities have since been forgotten or neglected. The appointment of the chairman of the Board could be restricted to only heads of tertiary institutions in Nigeria perhaps in rotational basis among the Vice-Chancellor of Universities, Rectors of Polytechnics, Monotechnics and Provosts of Colleges of Education.”

Good News!! Price Of Rice Falls Drastically As Harvest Begins (See New Details)

This is awesome and a very good news for Nigerians as reports from eyewitnesses indicates that the price for food items especially grains have dropped in Kano state as recent harvests have filled markets.

This will have a good effect in helping Nigerians improve in their standard of living as more food will be made available in the market at a cheaper price.

The amount spent on foodstuffs before will buy more quantity in the market.

According to the survey conducted in some markets in Kano state, it was revealed that the prices of food commodities especially maize, millet, sorghum and local rice have dropped by about 40 per cent.

According to NAN, the survey also shows that a bag of maize is now selling for N8,500, this was sold for about N12,500 as at last month, so that a paint bucket measure of maize is now N350, it was sold for between 400 and 450 last month.

A bag of millet is now sold for N9,500 dropping from N14,000. Also, a 100kg bag of local rice, is now being sold at between N26,000 and N28,000, it used to be sold for between N33,000 and N40,000. A paint measure now sells for N600 and not N750.

The survey also looked into sorghum ‎which sold for N16,000 before the harvest, but now cost about N13,000 per bag, a bag of wheat crashed from N24,000 to N16,000.

While the survey was on, some consumers expressed optimism that the prices would go lower. The traders were of the opinion that the price crash was as a result of increased produce from farms.

Alhaji Sani Ali, who is a trader at Dawanau International Grains market, said prices of the commodities would further reduce due to the recession.

He said: “I am sure the price will further go down due to low patronage by companies and individual buyers. Most of the companies now buy half of what they used to buy before because of the economic situation and some buy on credit.”

Malam Isa Sule however had a different opinion, he expressed confidence that prices would further go down because the harvest season was far from over.

Barely a month ago, according to investigations at Hadejia market, Jigawa state. Food prices were down by about 30 percent.

A bag of millet was going for N14, 000 as against N18, 000 while a bag of paddy rice went for N8, 500 as against its previous price of N11, 000.

Maize and sorghum were sold at N11, 000 and N13, 000 down from their old prices of N15, 000 and N17, 000, respectively.

“As farmers continue to harvest, the supply of the commodities will continue to flood the markets and this will push prices further down,” he said.
Meanwhile, the prices of bread, biscuits and other baked goods are set to go up by 15 per cent, Nigerian bakers have confirmed.

There are reports that the bakers under the aegis of Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCON) said the new prices take effect from October 17.
