Social Media is a nightmare to us - Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has described social media as a nightmare to image makers because of its disinformation through fake and distorted news.

The minister who stated this on Monday in Lagos at the opening of the 4th Commonwealth Public Relations Congress, noted that image makers in both public and private sectors were victims of the trend.

He, therefore, charged PR practitioners to devise innovative ways to ensure a better, charged-way communication network between their employer and the people.

The event organised by the Management School, London and the Business Education Examinations Council, has the theme “Strategic Management of Reputation Risk in an Interdependent World.’’

“Today, anyone with access to a smart phone can put out any information, whether accurate or not, that could go viral in minutes.

“No fact-checking, no accuracy, no fairness, no rules. They just spread whatever information catches their fancy, and they have their own public that believes them.” he said.

The minister however said that the trend is global, affecting international and local affairs including the recent U.S. elections.

“To understand the seriousness of this, there is an on-going debate in the U.S. over the role that disinformation played in the recent presidential election.

“Some even accused the social networking site, Facebook, of helping to swing the election in favour of Mr. Donald Trump, through the fake and distorted news spread by websites belonging to those who call themselves Alt-Right, or Alternative Right.

“Of course Facebook has denied that. But then Facebook and Google have taken concrete action to check this by seeking to cut off the live wire to these fake news websites,” he said.

According to published reports, Google said it will prevent websites that misrepresent content from using its advertising network, while Facebook said its ban on deceptive and misleading content also applies to fake news.

The minister said, locally, the trend has also made the job of government image makers so daunting that it is denying them of sleep.

“Government image makers now sleep with one eye opened, that’s if we sleep at all, because while we are sleeping, the purveyors of distorted and fake news are busy cooking their stuff.

“I cannot count the number of times that I have been removed from the Information and Culture portfolio on the social media in the past year, or that ministers have swapped portfolios,’’ he said.

The minister seized the opportunity to refute the fake report that President Buhari gave $500 million to Hilary Clinton during the U.S. Electioneering Campaign.

“Even when the Presidency has denied this outrageous concoction, the so-called analysts and experts have continued to comment on it as if it is true,” he said.

In tackling the challenge, the minister said that in addition to radio, television, newspapers and the new media, his ministry revived an age-long practice of Town Hall Meeting to engage people directly and get their feedback on topical issues.

Mike Okereke, a public relations practitioners in a welcome address, said the summit afforded the them (PR practitioners from the Commonwealth) opportunity to exchange ideas on best practices.

He urged participants to adopt positive attitude in the discharge of their duties.

Also speaking, the President, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Rotimi Oladele, underscored the need for practitioners to build effective policy and implementation of information management.

'I caught my husband in bed with my younger sister'

   "Dear Pulse,
My name is Rita, a 32-year-old married woman with two kids. I have been married for eight years now but I am presently done with this marriage.
Though my family and friends have advised that I give my husband, Sunny , another chance so that I do not become a single mother, I have decided to move on because of what he did.
You would not believe that I caught Sunny having sex with my own younger sister,  Daphne , on our matrimonial bed.
If that is not enough to leave him, I don't what is. I knew that Sunny had severally cheated on me with different women but since I had never caught him at it, I just played the fool and behaved as if I did not know, after all, what the eyes does not see, the heart should not grieve about.
But never in my wildest dream would I have expected that he would do it with my own sister and the pain is so much that if I continue to live with him, I may end up killing him.
It happened that I travelled to Abuja on official assignment and had to call Daphne to come and stay in the house to take care of my children.
That was not the first time I had invited her over anytime I travelled but little did I know that I was inviting trouble into my home.
Daphne, at 26, had always been the black sheep of the family with no meaningful relationship at her age but how would I have known that she would extend her body to my husband.
I was supposed to come back to Lagos on a Saturday but on Thursday, my boss called that I should come back to the office as there was an emergency that needed my attention urgently.
I had to quickly call the airline and rescheduled my flight back and flew into Lagos earlier than expected. I had some things I had bought for my kids and husband as well as Daphne, so I had to go home to drop them before going to the office.
I saw no point in calling Sunny as I felt he would be in the office at that time, so I took an airport taxi home.
The first sign of trouble was when I saw Sunny's car in the compound but I thought he had decided to go with their staff bus, something he did once in a while.
When I opened the door and saw the whole place scattered, I made a mental note to let Daphne know she should have cleaned up the place.
I dragged my bags to the bedroom with the intention of just dumping them and dashing back to the office with the taxi that brought me.
But as I was making my way to the bedroom, I heard some sounds that froze me to a spot. They were the unmistakable sounds of a couple making love. In that moment, it flashed into my head that Sunny had brought a woman home to have sex.
Without thinking twice, I barged into the unlocked bedroom and lo and behold, there were my husband and my own sister on our bed, having sex.
My screams must have brought them back to earth as I faintly saw them rush for their clothes. I passed out and only became conscious in the hospital.
It has been three weeks since I witnessed the abomination and I am currently staying with a friend while contemplating what to do.
Sunny and my family members have been begging me but how would I live with the knowledge that my husband and my sister had sex on my matrimonial bed?
Rita."

Past Military administrations caused Nigeria's problem, not PMB

Senator representing  Imo North. constituency, Sen. Athan Achonu has told Nigerians not to blame President Muhammadu Buhari for the country’s problems.

Achonu also argued that the problems were caused by past military administrations.

He made the comments while speaking to Vanguard in Abuja.

“Buhari is not the problem; this problem was created by the military. It is the military cartel that has ravaged this country. The moment they came in, true federalism disappeared,” he said.

Achonu however advised Buhari to search beyond his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to get a new team that will get the country’s economy back on track.

Boko Haram Strikes in Bornu again !!

Terrorist sect, Boko Haram  have attacked a Makalama village just 15 kilometres from the notorious Chibok town in Borno state, the Cable reports. A resident of the village, Hassan Usman, revealed this to reporters, saying that the attack occurred on November 19.

He added that but for the intervention of the Nigerian army, the entire village would have been burnt down.

“The attack happened two days ago, the road they (Boko Haram) normally pass through had been blocked by the military, so they took another axis and attacked Makalama, which is 15 kilometres away from Chibok,” the local said.

“We were all afraid. Thank God there was no casualty. The military moved in and repelled them, though they set an explosive on the road, it did not affect the military, but a vehicle which had contact with it, got destroyed but the driver escaped. “They had almost burnt down the entire village leaving just a few houses before the military came in.”

According to him, the terrorists were trying to steal foodstuff from the residents, who were harvesting their farm produce. Usman continued:

“People are using this opportunity to bring in their harvest from the farm, and Boko Haram decided to collect foodstuff.” “If the government does not take adequate measure, Boko Haram would get stronger. “We want the government to put more effort because there is no week that we have not come under attacks in the past three or four months.

“These people are not far away from Chibok, that’s the Boko Haram. We want the government to use the air force.”

Pope Francis Extends Power To Forgive Abortion

Pope Francis on Monday extended the power of Catholic priests to forgive women who have had abortions.

Pope who made the announcement in a letter- “apostolic letter” after the Catholic Church Holy Year of Mercy, said that abortion is a “grave sin” adding that the Catholic Church’s stance on abortion has not changed.

In the same way, however, I can and must state that there is no sin that God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father.

“May every priest, therefore, be a guide, support and comfort to penitents on this journey of special reconciliation.

“I henceforth grant to all priests, in virtue of their ministry, the faculty to absolve those who have committed the sin of procured abortion,” he added.

He noted that this will make it easier for women who have had abortions to be absolved for their actions, and rejoin the church.
